The history of Xi'an's ancient city wall can be traced back to the Tang Dynasty. During the Tang Dynasty, Xi'an was the capital of China and was called Chang'an. It was one of the largest cities in the world at that time. The layout of the Tang Dynasty city wall roughly followed that of the Qin and Han Dynasties, and it was magnificent in scale. However, the existing Xi'an City Wall was mainly built during the Ming Dynasty. At the beginning of the Ming Dynasty, Xi'an, as an important military stronghold, needed to strengthen its city defense system. During the Yongle period (1406–1420), at the order of the Ming emperor Zhu Di, the city walls of Xi'an were completely rebuilt and expanded, forming the prototype of the ancient city walls of Xi'an as we see them today. After hundreds of years of repair and maintenance, the ancient city walls of Xi'an have basically maintained their original appearance.

City towers are located above the city gates, and are important buildings for commanding, observing and defending. Corner towers are located at the four corners of the city wall, and are towers built to strengthen the defensive capabilities of the corners.
